There are hundreds of studies that attempt to define the specific degree of risk that smoking entails in relation to a variety of health problems. However, long before all the research proved that it was dangerous to smoke, tobacco was actually used for medicinal purposes, most specifically to lower blood pressure. Besides, if smoking cigars bring relaxation or enjoyment, then it is providing a mental health benefit.
Are you a new cigar smoker and want to know the effect of cigars in the body? Or you are just imagining the reason why people smoke cigars in the first place?
While cigars are labeled bad and dangerous to health, it is important for you to know that there are still some positive effects that they have on the body of smokers.
The Positive Effect of Cigars
While there is many health-related information regarding the negative effects of smoking cigars, there are actually some positive effects, believe it or not, that most health organizations don’t talk about.
Cigar smoking has been proven to reduce the risk of a common form of death by over 54%, which is by Parkinson’s disease. A long-proven study done by the University of California Los Angeles School of Public Health has confirmed that long-term and current cigar smokers actually developed a protection against degenerative nerve diseases, with positive effects still existing for smokers, who had quit years prior. After studying over 11,800 people during the course of 11 studies in between the years of 1960 and 2004, health professionals concluded that tobacco ultimately can prevent the development of toxic substances that interfere with proper neurological functioning, and more specifically proved an inverse association between cigar-smoking and Parkinson’s disease. The reason for this is because carbon monoxide and other agents present in tobacco are known to exert a protective effect while promoting the survival of brain neurons that produce dopamine, which in turn allows for muscles to move properly.
Additionally, cigar-smoking has been proven to curb appetites which in turn reduces obesity rates, lowers blood pressure, and produces natural levels of clopidogrel, which is known to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and other heart-related diseases.
Moderation is Key
Not to make light of the health consequences of smoking, but the old rule about enjoying everything in moderation seems to apply. Cigar smokers should also avoid deep inhalation, which is the root of so many health-related illnesses that cigarette smokers experience.
According to cancer.org, if you smoke less than one cigar per day, then that makes you an occasional cigar smoker, with zero definitively known risks. Therefore, there is no definitive proof that the health of most people would be significantly impacted by smoking a few cigars per week.
Moreover, a recent FDA study shows that smoking up to two cigars a day results in minimal health risks. Led by Dr. Cindy Chang and published in BMC Public Health, this study noted that after analyzing the risks of cigar smoking in over 22 prospective epidemiologic studies, consumption of up to two cigars per day, while not completely safe, is neither associated with significantly increased risks for death from all causes, nor smoking-related cancers. But even here, the connection is hardly one to one. Not all who smoke develop these disorders, and not all who develop them smoke. In the United States four out of five deaths from heart disease occur among nonsmokers.
So ultimately, if you, too, wish to continue smoking cigars for maximum pleasure and minimum health risk, buy those of quality, aka an El Septimo, limit yourself to a few per week, and don’t inhale.
